Mueller’s Height

Mueller’s Height is the highest point of the Bolotnaya dune, which is part of the Curonian Spit. Locals often call the dune “Krutaya”, while Germans once called it “Bruchberg”. Bolotnaya is one of the largest dunes located near the village of Rybachy, which was once called Rossitten. Müller’s Height, to which a comfortable eco-trail leads, is especially popular not only with tourists, but also with residents of Kaliningrad, Zelenogradsk and Svetlogorsk.

Highlights

‘ Curonian Spit. Martian landscapes, dense forests and sand dunes of the Curonian Spit as if specially created for leisurely walks and contemplation of the surrounding splendor: the Curonian Bay, the Baltic Sea, century-old fir trees and stunning panorama of the surrounding area.

.

Müller Heights is located in an area that is the oldest part of the Curonian Spit – on the glacial island of Rasite. It was this island that formed the basis for the formation of the sandy body of the peninsula.

The pedestrian eco-trail leading to the Müller Heights, laid on the 32nd km of the Curonian Spit, 2.3 km southwest of the village of Rybachy, has a circular shape and can accommodate up to 30 people. It is equipped with interactive information stands, small rest areas and a main observation platform. The latter offers mind-blowing views not only of the Baltic and the Curonian Lagoon, but also of the forests, the village of Rybachy and Lake Chaika, which the Germans called “Möyvenbruch”, which translates as Chaika Swamp.

.

The route of medium difficulty to the height of Müller begins with a fairly flat and wide sandy path, which is surrounded on both sides by huge pine and spruce trees. The approximate age of the furry beauties is 120-140 years. Then the flat trail changes to a sharp rise. This section of the road is equipped with a convenient wooden staircase with a railing. To avoid any problems on the way, you should think about suitable footwear in advance. At the very end of the trail, the path becomes relatively gentle again.

To get to the observation deck you can also take the second section of the route, which is not equipped with a wooden ladder, as it, unlike the first section described above, is not so steep. The length of the northern direction of the route is approximately 1.5 km, the length of the southern direction is 2 km.

.

The northern direction of the eco-trail is suitable for people with good physical shape, as there are almost no benches on the way to Müller’s peak. Those with health problems should prefer the southern direction, which has a smooth ascent to the summit, and turn right from the first fork of the eco-trail. Such tourists will be able to see the northern direction of the route on the way back.

The eco-trail ends with a covered wooden observation deck. From there open such mind-boggling and breathtaking views that they will definitely impress not only novice tourists, but also avid travelers. The entire hike from start to finish one way takes about 30-50 minutes in time if you walk at a moderate pace.

The Story of Mueller Heights

‘ Curonian Spit. By the way, another height on the Curonian Spit, Efa (the Walnut Dune), is named after Franz Efa, who brought Müller’s idea to life.

.

In 1882, a memorial sign to Müller in the form of a massive granite boulder was erected on the summit of Bruchberg, which is 44.4 meters high. On the chiseled surface of this stone are embossed the date and the inscription in German: “Müller’s Höhe, 1882.”

The easiest way to get to Müller Heights is by own or rented vehicle or cab.
