King Samuil’s Fortress

King Samuil’s Fortress is one of the oldest medieval fortifications in Macedonia. The fortress is the hallmark of the ancient city of Ohrid and one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The fortress rises majestically at a hundred-meter height above Lake Ohrid, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding area.

.

History

In the 10th century, the Bulgarian king Samuel decided to make Ohrid the capital of Macedonia. And to make it safe to stay and rule, he ordered to rebuild the old defenses that were already there. Thus, a three-kilometer long fortress with almost two dozen watchtowers appeared in Ohrid. In those days, the fortress served as a kind of gateway to the town. Actually, even now the main historical sights of Ohrid can be seen somewhere nearby.

.

The fortress has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. That is why the appearance of the fortress clearly shows a mixture of different styles of construction, especially clearly visible in the ruins of the old citadel.

.

In addition to its defensive functions, the fortress was also residential.

.

The modern history of King Samuel’s fortress began in 2000, when archaeological research conducted at the castle site uncovered many valuable finds, including the famous “Golden Mask” and “golden glove” dating back to the 5th century BC
