English Harbour
English Harbour is the most notable place for antique lovers on the island of Antigua. It is located in the southern part of the island, fifteen kilometers from the nation’s capital, and is known as Antigua and Barbuda’s largest collection of historical monuments.
.Attractions
English Harbour attractions are linked to the colonial past of this small country, which until recently belonged to Great Britain. In the eighteenth century, a British naval anchorage was established in English Harbor, which now bears the name “Nelson’s Dockyard”. It got its name in honor of the famous Admiral Nelson, a hero of the Napoleonic Wars. Nowadays it is home to a small national park dedicated to the history of the naval war between England and France in the early nineteenth century.

An important landmark is Clarence House, which was built especially for the future King William IV (1765-1837). Further on, in Shirley Heights are the buildings of the observation post, from which there is a fine view far ahead over Montserrat and the island of Guadeloupe. On Sundays there are festivities with barbecues and live music. An ancient cemetery can also be visited here.
.Nearby is an interactive center where tourists can see a multimedia presentation about the island of Antigua, starting with its settlement. From the observation decks there is a beautiful view of the harbor, the ruined fortifications of Fort Berkeley. All of this, along with the beautiful beaches, has become a popular destination for tourists especially during Sailing Week.
.
By the way, adjacent to English Harbor is the natural harbor of Falmouth Harbor, where a whole tourist complex has been created. The main monuments of antiquity located in the harbor area are St. Paul’s Anglican Church, built at the end of the seventeenth century and the first Christian church in Antigua, and Fort Great Fort George. Buried in the cemetery next to St. Paul’s Church is James Charles Pitt, the youngest son of William Pitt, a prominent eighteenth-century English politician. In the Falmouth Harbor area, restaurants and comfortable hotels are open to tourists.
