Place of Lermontov’s duel
The place of Lermontov’s duel is a clearing marked by an obelisk on the northwestern slope of Mount Mashuk. Here on July 15, 1841 there was a duel between M. Y. Lermontov and N. S. Martynov. The poet was killed by a shot in the chest. Every year on the day of the great Russian poet’s death admirers of his talent gather at the monument. Interestingly, the exact place of the duel is still debated. The memorial obelisk has a classical pyramidal shape, it is made of Kislovodsk dolomite. In the center, in a round niche is a bronze bust of M. Lermontov in the form of an officer of the Tenginsk infantry regiment. The monument is part of the complex of structures of the State Museum-Reserve of M. Y. Lermontov and is one of the important attractions of Kislovodsk.
