The New Cathedral in Linz or Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Catholic church located in the city of Linz. It is the largest church building in Austria with a capacity of up to 20,000 people.

Architecture

The presented cathedral is built in neo-Gothic style. It is worth noting that the New Cathedral in Linz has as many as six chapels, which are decorated with magnificent stone statues and marble altars. This grand cathedral resembles a Catholic cross in its layout. One can easily say that the grand architectural complex – Neuer Dom is beyond words.

This Austrian cathedral covers an area of about five thousand square meters. Its main tower has a height of about one hundred and thirty-five meters. To be more specific, the New Cathedral was built in about sixty years. Its construction began in the sixties of the nineteenth century. The erection of the cathedral took place at the expense of the Catholic Church, as well as at the expense of the city. Earlier the cathedral was called the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception or Mariendom.

The building was designed by the famous architect Vincent Statz, who is the author of the amazing cathedral in Cologne. The new cathedral in Linz features skyward-looking tower lines, large arched windows that are decorated with lace, and recessed portals inside the church. The interior of the church glows with a golden luster, while shimmering in the Gothic twilight.

It should be noted that this unique cathedral has about two thousand stained glass windows, many of which tell the ancient history of the city of Linz itself (many victories, wars, and Catholic events). There is also a magnificent organ in the New Cathedral, which attracts a huge number of Catholics and tourists during the Christmas season.

History

The construction of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was initiated in 1855 by Bishop Franz Josef Rudiger.

During World War II, some of the stained glass windows were damaged, especially in the southern part of the cathedral.

These stained glass windows were not restored to their original image and were replaced with stained glass windows of modern art.
