Srebarna Nature Reserve

Srebarna Nature Reserve is located in northeastern Bulgaria, near the village of the same name, 16 km west of the town of Silistra, 2 km south of the Danube. The Srebyrna Reserve includes the karst lake of the same name and its surroundings, this area lies on the main migration route of migratory birds between Europe and Africa, called “Via Pontica”.

General information

In 1983, Lake Srebyrna was inscribed on the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List. The main value is considered to be rare and endangered bird species. The Bulgarian authorities strive to preserve the unique biodiversity, thanks to which the lake has been known in European scientific circles since the early 20th century.

The Biosphere Reserve is spread over an area of 600 hectares, near the village of Srebyrna, where only 755 people live. It includes Lake Srebyrna and the areas around it.

Among the most interesting species that inhabit Lake Srebyrna are the dalmatian pelican, pisculus, ducks, mustached tit, great white heron, mute swan, lesser cormorant and others.
