History of the Russian Gate

During the Ottoman Empire, Anapa was turned into a center of the slave trade. In addition, the Turks made the seaside city a spiritual center, from where the traditions of Islam were planted among the mountain peoples.

The fortress by the sea was built of local white stone. It was needed to strengthen the Turkish positions located near the Caucasus Mountains. In the construction of the fort, the Turks were assisted by experienced French engineers. The fortress included seven bastions, was 3.2 kilometers long and stretched along the entire coast.

.

The height of the fortress walls reached up to 8 meters. Under them there was a moat 16 m wide and 4 m deep. The earth moat was reinforced with stone slabs and served as an additional obstacle to the enemy. Three gates led inside the fortress. The entrance that survived and is called the Russian Gate, was located in the east of the fort.

.

Russian soldiers tried to liberate Anapa several times. Over the course of 40 years, Russian units stormed the city six times. When the coast was conquered, it was decided to destroy the entire Turkish fortress to the ground, except for one entrance gate. They were left as a monument to the victory of the Russian arms.
