Murom Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery
Murom Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery is the oldest monastery of Holy Orthodox Russia, older than it is only the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. The first mention of the monastery dates back to 1096. The male monastery of the Murom diocese rises on the left bank of the Oka River. According to legend, the monastery arose on the site of the fortified court of the first Murom prince Gleb. For a long time it served as one of the main defensive frontiers of the city. The main architectural monuments in the ensemble of the monastery are the Transfiguration Cathedral, the Refectory with the Transfiguration Church, the Abbot’s building, the Gate Church of Cyril Belozersky, the Brotherhood building.
