Mozarthaus

Mozart House is the composer’s only surviving apartment in Vienna. It is located at Domgasse 5. The composer lived here from 1784 to 1787. His apartment on the second floor consists of four rooms, two study rooms and a kitchen. Mozart lived in this apartment longer than in any other of the more than a dozen apartments in Vienna. At that time, the composer was already famous, revolving in social circles and receiving many invitations to perform in the best houses of the Austrian capital.

Background

In January 2006, after a thorough renovation that cost the city eight million euros, the Mozart House was opened as a museum under the name Mozarthaus. It was formerly known to tourists and residents of Vienna as the “House of Figaro”, as this is where Mozart wrote his world-famous opera The Marriage of Figaro.

The former apartment building, is located in the historic center of Vienna – the so-called Old Town. It is separated from St. Stephen’s Cathedral by only a few hundred meters, and Domgasse translates as “Cathedral Lane”.Wolfgang Amadeus spent perhaps his happiest years here. In any case, he never lived in any other apartment as long as he did here.

Above all, at this time Mozart was known as a celebrated composer who had a brilliant circle of friends and received numerous invitations to give concerts in the best houses of the local nobility. And here, on Domgasse Street, he created some of his best compositions.

Tourists

Tourists are also introduced to the works of the great Austrian and the atmosphere of Vienna at the time.
