History of the village of Kuchugury

The village of Kuchugury is located on the area where in VI-I centuries BC was the ancient Greek polis Kimmerik. In 480 BC he became part of the Bosporan kingdom, uniting with neighboring cities-colonies. This state occupied the territory on both banks of the Kerch Strait. Kimmerik on the Taman Peninsula belonged to the “Asian” part of the kingdom, and the city with the same name, located in the Crimea, belonged to its “European” territories.

.

Within the modern resort there are two archaeological locations – on the coast and a kilometer away from it. In the ancient settlement remote from the sea, the remains of fortifications with defense towers have been excavated. It is believed that here was one of the fortresses that were part of the defense system of the “Asian” possessions of the Bosporan Kingdom. This fortified settlement existed presumably until the 4th century and was repeatedly subjected to fires and destructions. The last of them are probably connected with the invasion of the Huns.

.
‘ The Taman peninsula was fiercely fought. In September 1942 German troops, having forced the Kerch Strait by ferries, landed in the area of the village and made their way deep into Taman. During the hostilities Kuchugury was almost completely destroyed, only three buildings survived. A bunker near the seashore reminds of the defensive battles. In 1990, in memory of the fallen defenders and in honor of the soldiers-liberators in the center of the village was opened a memorial.
