The fortress was erected in 1732, its commandant was the Austrian Baron Adam Sigmund von Tungen, after which the fort was named. During its existence Fort Tungen was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. It was surrounded by deep moats filled with water, and it was connected to the outside world by a 170-meter tunnel that led out to Fort Obergrünwald.
