Pico Duarte Peak

Located in the Central Cordilleras, Duarte Peak with its height of 3,087 meters is the highest mountain in the Caribbean. The area around Duarte Peak is largely uninhabited due to a lack of fresh water, so the first known ascent was only made in 1944 in honor of the centennial of Dominican Independence Day, and it became a tourist destination in the mid-1980s. Today, about 3,000 daredevils climb the peak to enjoy the scenic view from there.

General Information

If climbing Duarte Peak is in your plans, keep in mind that it will be much colder than usual at altitude, so stock up on warm clothing and rain gear. We recommend taking a guide, especially if you have to spend the night in a tent before reaching your destination. Even for experienced hikers, the climb will be a serious challenge due to the rough terrain that feels like trying to throw you off a cliff. Therefore, you will need strong legs and suitable footwear.

.

In the park and while climbing the mountain, you will see many birds that are only found in this region, such as the palm chequan, recognized as the national bird of the Dominican Republic, the red-tailed sarynx, the local parrot and the Zumbador hummingbird. Several dozen different species of reptiles will hover beneath your feet. Wild boars, which have been introduced to the island, roam the slopes, as well as smaller mammals and rodents. Wild mountain olive, West Indian laurel, wild braciletto, and Creole pine trees are among the varied trees you’ll encounter. Naturalists will marvel at the flora growing along the banks of the Yaque del Norte River.
