Central Naval Museum

Central Naval Museum is the largest maritime museum in the world, which originated from a collection of ship models back in the Petrine period. At that time it was located at the Admiralty. Since 1939 it was located in the building of the former Stock Exchange on Strelka Vasilievsky Island, and in 2013 it moved from the Stock Exchange building to the barracks of the naval crew on Truda Square.

General information

In April 2013, the transfer of the museum’s collection to the restored Kryukovsky (Naval) Barracks complex was completed. In the summer of the same year the exhibition complex of 6 halls, the exposition in the atrium and the first stage of the main exposition of 6 halls began to work. By the Day of the Navy, July 27, 2014, the exposition consisting of 19 halls was fully opened to the public.

The museum has six branches: on the cruiser “Aurora”, “Submarine D-2 “Narodovolets”, “Kronstadt Fortress” in St. Petersburg; “Road of Life” (Ladoga Lake village, Leningrad region), Museum of the Baltic Fleet (Baltiysk), Ship of Military Glory “Mikhail Kutuzov” (Novorossiysk).

The museum tells about the history of creation, glorious combat past and modern life of the Russian Navy. In the funds of the museum more than 730 thousand exhibits (models of ancient and modern ships, flags and banners, military trophies, samples of weapons and equipment, paintings by marine artists). The famous ancient boat belonging to Peter the Great is kept here. Great interest among boys invariably cause models of the glorious ships of the Russian Navy.
