Birka
Birka is an ancient settlement founded by the Vikings in the late 8th century, which later became one of the largest trading centers in the Baltic.
.General information
Birka is located 28 km west of Stockholm on Lake Mälaren on the island of Björkö (Birch Island).
.On the outskirts of Birka, archaeologists have discovered the largest Viking cemetery in Sweden (over 2500 graves). Why the flourishing city so soon came to complete desolation – scientists do not know. Nowadays Birka is on the list of UNESCO protected sites. The museum displays local archaeological finds, but excavations continue (Opening hours: May-Sept. Mon-Fri. 10.00-16.00, Sat. and Sun. until 17.00).
