Bangkok Canals (Klongi)
Bangkok Canals (Klongi) are a definite symbol of the city, due to which Bangkok is called the “Venice of the East”. The canals in Thailand were originally built to create new transportation routes to facilitate the transportation of goods, and in the process the Klongs began to be settled by people: huts on stilts were built along the banks.
General information
At this point, most of the canals (klongs) that cut through the city had been filled in, firstly because of the danger of epidemics, and secondly because of the construction of Bangkok’s vital highways. Only in Thonburi in the early morning do traders still congregate on the klongs. Nevertheless, the klong-gam boat trip has not lost the interest of tourists. It is best to start from the jetty at the Oriental Hotel. In the mornings there are many boatmen ready to take a passenger first through the Chao Phraya and then through the complex weave of large and small klongs. To see the floating market that Bangkok used to be famous for, you now have to go to Dam Nensaduak.
