Zoo in St. Petersburg

Zoo in St. Petersburg is one of the oldest zoos in Russia and one of the northernmost in the world. The Zoological Garden in St. Petersburg was opened in 1865 by animal lovers Sofia and Julius Gebgardt. After the revolution it was nationalized. Nowadays the St. Petersburg Zoo has one of the largest collections of animals of different natural zones in Russia, including rare specimens. In the newly built building of the exotarium you can see crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, exotic insects.

The zoo is very small in size and quite cramped: on the territory of 7.5 hectares contain 2000 animals representing more than 400 species – lions, tigers, polar and brown bears, camels, monkeys, etc.

The zoo is very small and quite cramped. Now the idea to build a new large zoo on the periphery of the city is being hotly discussed. For now, the historical zoo, despite everything, is very popular with children and adults. On weekends and holidays there is a real pandemonium at the cages with animals. There are a variety of children’s attractions and entertainment.
