General information

The five northern islands in the shallow Wadden Sea form an arc-shaped coastline, the extremes of which are the islands of Texel and Schiermonnikoog.

.

The historic islands are a breeding center for birds, as well as a haven for permanently stressed Southerners who want to get in touch with their natural roots.

.

Texel is the largest and most populated island. The island’s beach line is 24 kilometers (15 miles) long. It hosts the world’s largest catamaran regatta every year in June. Only on Texel the main language is Dutch – on the other four the common language is Frisian. The island of Terschelling is considered a place of desperate entertainment, while Vlieland, on the other hand, has a more cozy family atmosphere. The island of Ameland has old-fashioned villages that are flooded with tourists in the summer. Ferries from Den Helder, Harlingen, Holwerd and Lauwersog connect the islands to the mainland.
