Isla de Vieques

Vieques is the second largest island of Puerto Rico by area. It is about 42 kilometers long and 7 kilometers wide. When the U.S. Navy left Vieques Island in 2003, after being based here for over 60 years, there was only something very special left – unspoiled nature.

General information

Vieques Island, once used for military purposes, is now defined as a National Reserve. It now has only a few mega-resorts, a few comfortable hotels, including the famous Great Escape B&B, where breakfast can be served right in the pool. There are only two major towns (population 10,000 to 20,000), Isabel Segunda in the north of the island and Esperanza in the south.

.

The charm of the island of Vieques lies in the secluded beaches where you can be rewarded with privacy, sand and water. The beach at Chiva (Blue Beach) is known for its snorkeling school, but the real wonder is Puerto Mosquito Bay, famous for its clear water and luminescent glow. It’s worth spending a night here, watching billions of microorganisms color the water with a magical blue-green heat and turn it into a watercolor painting.

.

The island of Vieques can easily be called “rural”, because its inhabitants prefer to travel by horseback, and traffic jams are caused only by pets.
