Ligurian Sea (from the ancient tribe of Ligurs who lived in the valley of the Rhone River) is a part of the Mediterranean Sea between the island of Corsica, the island of Elba and the coast of the Gulf of Genoa. It washes the territory of France, Monaco and Italy. The area of 15 thousand km², average depth 1 200 m, the greatest 2 546 m. Tides are semidiurnal, their value is 0.3 m. The water temperature ranges from 13 °C in winter to 23.5 °C in summer. Salinity is about 38 ‰. The coasts are mostly steep and rocky, with sandy beaches. On the coast is the famous Riviera resort area.
