Sulawesi is an inter-island sea in the western Pacific Ocean. It is located between the islands of Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Mindanao, Sangihe and the Sulu Archipelago. The sea has a surface area of about 453,000 km², depth up to 6220 m, temperature during the year 27-28°C, salinity about 34.5‰.

General information

The Sulu Archipelago is home to many coral reefs, and the low shores of Kalimantan are mostly occupied by mangrove forests.

The surface currents of the Sulawesi Sea are formed by the Mindanao Current. Through the Sulawesi Sea, the waters of the Pacific Ocean tends to the Indian Ocean.

Sea tides are semi-diurnal, more than 3 meters high.

The main ports of the sea are Wenang on the island of Sulawesi and Tarakan on the island of the same name.
