Smederevo Fortress

Smederevo Fortress is located on the banks of the Danube, 50 km from Belgrade. The construction of the castle began in 1428 and continued until 1439. From here, Georgije Branković ruled the Serbian despotism. The town of Smederevo eventually emerged around the castle. The Smederevo fortress is famous because its capture by the Turks in 1459 marked the final fall of medieval Serbian statehood. The building is a monumental complex, which resembles an irregular triangle in plan. The fortress borders the Danube River on one side, the Jezava River on the other, and the third side is open and protected only by walls. The Smederevo fortress consists of the Small and Great Hrads and has 25 towers with a height of about 25 meters. From the observation deck of the fortress you can see the vineyards surrounding Smederevo from all sides. From this region it is worth bringing a bottle of “Vranac” – the most famous Smederevo wine.
