Museum-reserve “Shchelykovo”
Shchelykovo is a state memorial and natural museum-reserve of A. N. Ostrovsky, located in the Kostroma region. The central object is the manor house built in the late 18th – early 19th century, which houses the writer’s memorial museum. It is a wooden classical building of gray color with white columns on two facades and two terraces. On the territory of the reserve you can also visit the literary and theater museum of Schelykovo. Here, tourists are introduced to two active expositions: “Ostrovsky’s theater” and “The fairy-tale world of the Snow Maiden”. The first presents personal belongings of the writer, household items, magazines, where the works of the playwright were published, as well as costumes and scenery for the plays. The second exposition is devoted to the history of the creation of the fairy tale “The Snow Maiden”. In Shchelykov there is a functioning Nikolskaya Church. Next to the church is the family grave of the Ostrovskys. Here rests the writer himself, his wife and their daughter Maria Chatelain. The excursion around the estate includes a visit to the house-museum of Ivan Sobolev, the writer’s close friend and master woodworker. The rich program is usually completed by a tea party with folk games and rituals.
