Isla Saona

Isla Saona is a small island in the southwest of the Dominican Republic. Visitors to this small island will find plenty of birds, but just as many old tourist tents. As soon as this once pristine place with pristine nature was declared a national park, it fell victim to human influence. Its ecosystem has been disrupted by increased fishing and poaching, which has led to the extinction of some vertebrates such as the Caribbean monk seal. The Nature Conservancy Council is now working with the Dominican Republic to restore the ecobalance and preserve the fragile coral reefs that have begun to erode due to uncontrolled snorkeling. But even now, it’s still a great place to visit for its picturesque beaches and striking palm forests.

General Information

The caves on the island of Saona have kept artifacts since the times of the Taino, especially famous are Cueva Jose Maria, Cueva del Puente and the less visited Penon Gordo, where it is recommended to go with a guide. Most interesting are the petroglyphs and pictographs depicting the first battles between the local tribes and the Spanish aliens. The area of the park involves a lot of hiking, so stock up on insect repellent, sun protection and plenty of fresh water.

.

The easiest way to see the national park is through an organized tour. You can also get in by paying a small entrance fee at the park office (Playa Bayahibe. Tel: 809-833-0022. 8.30-12.30 daily), a local gamekeeper can be hired as a guide for extra money. Some people rent a boat to go around the coast, but if you want to walk around the park, you need a guide.
