Santa Isabel Island
Santa Isabel, the longest island in the Solomon Islands archipelago, is volcanic in origin and in places surrounded by coral reefs. Santa Isabel lies east of Malaita Island and west of Choiseul Island. The island has an area of almost 2,999 km², is 200 km long and varies in width from 20 to 30 km. The climate here is hot, tropical, sometimes experiencing earthquakes and strong storms. The climate is hot and tropical, with occasional earthquakes and violent storms. Santa Isabel Island is notable for the fact that it was the first of the islands of the archipelago, on which the foot of a European stepped. This was done by Spanish traveler Alvaro Mendaña in 1568.
