Red Lake in Romania (Lacul Roşu)

Red Lake in Romania is located in the northeast of the country, near another landmark, the Bicaz Gorge. The mountain lake is of natural origin, and it is quite young. The reservoir appeared in 1837 as a result of heavy rains and a powerful collapse of rocks, which blocked the mountain stream, forming a semblance of a dam. The height of the Red Lake above sea level is 980 m, the length of the shoreline is 3 km, the depth is 10.5 m and the area is 0.115 km². Despite the name, the water in the lake is not red at all. The lake got its name because of a legend, according to which once, during a thunderstorm, sheep died in this place, and their blood spilled in the valley, forming the lake.
