Puerta del Sol Square

Puerta del Sol Square is Madrid’s central square and one of the capital’s most famous landmarks. In Spanish, the name of the square means “Gate of the Sun”. Once there really was a fortress wall with gates, but they were demolished back in 1521 by order of Spanish King Carlos I. In Puerta del Sol square there are buildings of XVIII-XIX centuries, which seem to take you back in time, there is a sculpture “Bear and strawberry tree” – the symbol of Madrid, at the post office there is the main clock of Spain, which marks the beginning of the New Year, as well as the “zero kilometer” – the place from which the counting of road distances in the country begins.
