Old Tatar Sloboda
Old Tatar Sloboda is a historical part of Kazan and a colorful city landmark stretching between Lake Nizhny Kaban in the north and Vakhitov Square in the south. The Old Tatar Sloboda was established after the capture of Kazan by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. Its first settlers were Tatars – warriors and feudal lords who took part in the conquest of the city. Travelers should definitely see the House of Shamil, the classicist houses of Yunusov-Apanayevs and Vali, the elegant House of Kushayev and the pompous House of Mullin. These residences belonged to industrialists and noble citizens of Kazan. They are organically complemented by old trade rows and buildings of industrial enterprises. Also here you can admire the beautiful mosques – Blue, Marjani, Burnaevskaya, Sennaya Cathedral and others.
