Nukunonu Atoll

Nukunonu Atoll is one of the three atolls of Tokelau, located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is the least populated atoll in Tokelau, with 426 people living here as of 2006. There are numerous beaches along its coastline. Canoe trips allow you to enjoy the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The ancient methods of fishing for marine life are still practiced here, such as shark fishing “On the bag” or octopus fishing “On the jug.”

General Information

The discoverer of Nukunonu Atoll was the captain of the British frigate Pandora. In mid-June 1791, while searching for the unknown destination of the missing ship “Bounty”, Edwards suddenly discovered a ring of unknown atoll, naming it Duke of Clarence Island.

A hotel was once built on Nukunonu Atoll. During their visits to the atoll, it is visited by dignitaries such as the Governor-General and the Prime Minister of New Zealand. The villagers buy the most necessary goods in the store located on the island. Some dwellings are equipped with satellite television.

In the southwestern part of the atoll is a modern village living a quiet and measured life. It lies on two islands – Nukunonu and Motuhaga, connected by unpretentious bridges. The villagers are all Catholics. There is one store located here. Some of the houses in Nukunonu Village have satellite television. To the northwest of the edge of the village is a small church building, the dome of which rises above the palm trees of the island.
