The State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg History Museum is one of Russia’s largest historical museums, allowing you to touch the 300-year history and culture of the Northern Capital. The first museum dedicated to the history of the city on the Neva River was founded on the initiative of the Society of Architects-Artists and was called the Museum of Old St. Petersburg. The idea of creating a cultural center emerged in 1907, and in 1908 the “Statute of the Museum” was signed. To date, the museum’s funds have accumulated more than 1.3 million exhibits reflecting the history of St. Petersburg since its foundation. The center of the museum is the Peter and Paul Fortress, whose historical buildings house expositions and temporary exhibitions. The State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg unites several branches: the Rumyantsev Mansion on the Angliyskaya Embankment, the Museum-Apartment of A. A. Blok, the Kirov Museum, the Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad on Victory Square, the Museum of Printing, the Museum of St. Petersburg Avant-Garde (Matyushin House) and the Oreshek Fortress in Shlisselburg.
