Monument to Vladimir Vysotsky in Moscow
Monument to Vladimir Vysotsky in Moscow is a bronze monument to the famous poet, bard and actor, located at the end of Strastnoy Boulevard, near Petrovsky Gate Square. The monument was unveiled in the summer of 1995, 15 years after Vladimir Vysotsky’s death, thanks to his friends Boris Messerer, Valery Yanklovitch and Boris Khmelnitsky. The intersection of Strastnoy Boulevard and Petrovka Street was not chosen for the monument by chance – this is the place where V. Vysotsky was born. In the surrounding streets and yards – in Bolshoy Karetny Lane, on Samotek and in Karetny Ryad – passed his childhood and youth.
.General information
Sculptor Gennady Dmitrievich Raspopov was friends with the actors of the Moscow Theater on Taganka. In 1979, a year before Vysotsky’s death, he sculpted a small figure of the actor as Hamlet. The sculpture was taken as a basis for the future monument. It was enlarged and cast in bronze. Architect Anatoly Vasilyevich Klimochkin participated in the work on the monument.
.
The actor is depicted with his arms spread out expressively and his face raised to the sky. Behind the back of Vysotsky hangs his faithful companion – a guitar. From afar, the figure resembles a large cross or crucifixion. The 2.4-meter-high bronze sculpture is mounted on a cubic granite pedestal with the inscription “To Vladimir Vysotsky.”
.
The small statue, which was sculpted by G. D. Raspopov, was intended to be viewed from the top down, so it looked very harmonious. When the miniature was enlarged to a large life-size sculpture, the face became poorly visible on the monument.
.
A small amphitheater is arranged in front of the monument, where you can sit and remember famous poems and songs. Vysotsky is loved and remembered, so there are always fresh flowers near his monument.
