Place des Martyrs
Martyrs Square is located in the center of Beirut, near the Al-Amin Mosque. The square is not only a historical landmark, but also a place for demonstrations and gathering of citizens. In the 19th century, it was called Cannon Square. In the 1930s, a monument to the Lebanese who fell in the struggle against the Turkish occupation of the country was erected in the square, and since then it has received its modern name. During the civil war, the so-called Green Line, which divided Beirut into Muslim and Christian neighborhoods, passed through this area. There was fierce fighting, and now the statue, riddled with bullets, is a reminder of the suffering of the Lebanese.
