Martvili Canyon

Martvili Canyon is one of Georgia’s many natural attractions. This rocky gorge is located in the west of the country, in the historical region of Samegrelo. Not so long ago Martvil Canyon, cut in the limestone rocks by the flow of the mountain river Abasha, was included in the number of tourist routes through the lands of ancient Colchis. This new destination is still little known to travelers, but tourists who have been to Martvili Canyon take away the best impressions.

Martville Canyon, also known as Martvili Canyon or Gachedili Canyon, is a natural monument near the village of Gachedili in the Martville Municipality. The canyon is located 240 meters above sea level. It lies on the hilly Odishi plateau, which stretches from the foothills of the Egrisi Range to the Colchis lowland, which extends to the shores of the Black Sea. The fertile plateau is covered by a dense network of streams and rivers. One of them, the Abasha River (66 km), cut through the limestone rocks picturesque canyon, stretching for 2.4 km.

The region has a humid subtropical climate. In summer the air warms up to +25…+30 ° C, in winter the thermometer columns rarely fall below zero. The average temperature in January is +4 °С.
