The Ionian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea between the Balkan and Apennine peninsulas and the islands of Crete and Sicily. It connects to the Adriatic Sea via the Strait of Otranto and to the Tyrrhenian Sea via the Strait of Messina.

The Ionian Sea has an area of 169,000 km² and a maximum depth of 5121 meters, which is the greatest depth of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Ionian Islands are located in the eastern part of the Ionian Sea. The largest bays of the Ionian Sea include Patraikos, Corinth, and Taranto.

The dynamics of the water temperature varies from 14 °C in February to 25.5 °C in August. Salinity exceeds 38 ‰. Tides are semi-diurnal (up to 0.4 m).

Economic activity: fishing (mackerel, red tuna, flounder, mullet).
