Imam Ali Mosque (Tomb of Ali)

Imam Ali Mosque is one of the most important mosques in the Islamic world, located in the city of Najaf in southern Iraq. The mosque was built according to Shiite traditions on the orders of the ruler Adud al-Dawla and was inaugurated in 977 over the burial place of Imam Ali, the closest relative and companion of the Prophet Muhammad. During its history of existence, the mosque was not once destroyed and burned, but always rebuilt.
