General information

Ilha Grandi once housed the infamous Candido Mendez penal colony, where the most dangerous criminals and political prisoners were exiled. Now the island is one area of rest and relaxation in a natural setting of stunning beauty.

Abrano, the unofficial capital of Ilha Grandi, is a quaint old village with whitewashed churches and low, brightly colored buildings with tiled roofs. The village consists of hotels, restaurants, bars and artisan shops.

Although the beach at Vila do Abrano seems flawless at first glance, there are even more idyllic sandy beaches in this tropical paradise. The wonderful beaches of Lopez Mendes are ideal for surfing, windsurfing and other water sports. The beaches of Grande das Palmas and others are very close to the east of the coast, while the beaches of JIaroa Azul, Fre gezia de Santana, Saco do Ceo are only accessible by boat.
