Hobbiton
Hobbiton is a village in New Zealand, artificially created especially for filming the trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” based on the works of the same name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This small settlement is the dwelling place of the writer’s fictional people. The setting includes hobbit dens, landscape elements and the Green Dragon Inn. Unlike standard movie backdrops, which are usually created out of cardboard and plywood, the village has been rebuilt for real.

To artificially age wooden and stone parts, a mass of lichen diluted in a nutrient solution was used. It was applied to the necessary surfaces. Due to the peculiarities of the composition, the lichen, whose development requires a very long period of time, grew in a matter of months.

The most important thing is the stunning realism and detailing: mailboxes, wicker baskets, lanterns, beautiful jars, curtains in the windows, laundry drying on ropes. It seems that good-natured, economic hobbits really live here, who are not seen on the streets just because it’s time for the second breakfast or third lunch.

You can visit the Green Dragon Inn, which is appropriately decorated outside and inside. Those who wish can feed the sheep or lambs here.
