English Embankment of St. Petersburg
Promenade des Anglais is the grand promenade of St. Petersburg and one of the most famous fragments of the Neva riverbank. It is considered the city’s most historically significant street. The English Embankment was built in 1767-1788 and it was the first embankment seen by foreign ships entering the city. It was on it that English merchants began to settle, and later many representatives of St. Petersburg’s nobility settled there. The length of the English Embankment along the banks of the Great Neva River is 1260 meters. Interestingly, it holds the record for the number of renames. In the documents of the XVIII century can be found 22 names of the embankment.
