Deribasovskaya Street

Deribasovskaya Street – one of the central streets of Odessa, is one of the main attractions of the city. The whole CIS knows this street, every Soviet person wants to walk along it.

.

General information

The street got its name (originally Italian: La strata Ribas) in honor of Jose de Ribas, the founder of Odessa and its first mayor, whose house was located on this street. Later his brother, Felix de Ribas, lived here. It is located parallel to Langeronovskaya and Grecheskaya Streets, between Preobrazhenskaya and Polskaya Streets.

.

The original name of the street was Gymnazskaya, sometimes the name Gymnazicheskaya. It was named after the commercial gymnasium Volsey, opened by decree of the first town governor Richelieu on April 16, 1804. Originally the street was divided by the Military beam, which descended to the military harbor, and the street was crossed by a bridge that separated Greek Square from Langeronovskaya Street. Since the gully was shallow in this place, it was soon filled in. Since July 6, 1811 the street is called Deribasovskaya or de Ribasovskaya, since 1814 – just Ribasovskaya, since 1836 the name De-Ribasovskaya, d’Ribasovskaya occurs. After the establishment of Bolshevik power in Odessa on April 30, 1920 the street was renamed into Lassalle Street. After the death of the test pilot Chkalov in 1938, the street was renamed into Chkalov Street. Since November 19, 1941, after the establishment of the Romanian occupiers in Odessa, the street was returned to its historical name.

.

Nowadays Deribasovskaya Street is a pedestrian zone with an abundance of architectural monuments of history, culture, nature, and the length of the street is only 1 kilometer. Next to Deribasovskaya, between Preobrazhenskaya and Havannaya Streets, is the second famous landmark – the First Park of Odessa, built in 1803, almost immediately after the founding of the city. In the park you can enjoy the enchanting sounds of the fountain. On Deribasovskaya Street you will see the no less famous Potemkin Stairs, which Count Vorontsov built for his wife. In Soviet times the staircase was named Potemkin Stairs in honor of the uprising on the battleship “Potemkin”, and it is still called so. Historical and cultural monuments and buildings are being restored and recreated with the precision with which they were built in the distant XIX century.

Opposite the city garden, on the other side of Deribasovskaya Street is the famous Passage – a historical monument of architecture of the XIX century, which is one of the most beautiful buildings of Deribasovskaya Street.
