History

Back in the 19th century, an unremarkable grove grew on the site of Dendropark in Kirovograd, but in 1893 Nikolay Davydov, a true connoisseur of landscape design, gave a start to the construction of the park “Veselye Bokovenki”. The name was taken from the Bokovenka River, the valley of which became the place for the future arboretum. N. Davydov worked on the idea of creating such a place since his youth, but his family did not welcome such a passion of his son and sent him to get a pragmatic profession of a lawyer. But, the desire did not go anywhere, and at the end of training, Nikolai returns to his native place and begins to realize his childhood dream.

.

Davydov was a very romantic and amorous person. It is said that to return to his native estate and lay a park here, he was prompted by his love for a neighbor girl, who, unfortunately, had no feelings for him. Perhaps through the park, he wanted to express his deep feelings. When building it, he took as a basis the design of the artist of Ukrainian origin Vladyslavsky-Padalka.

.

It can be said that the arboretum became the meaning of Nikolai Lvovich’s life. To make his park truly the best, he traveled to many countries throughout Europe, familiarizing himself with the peculiarities of design and development of park architecture. During these travels he met the famous parkologist Regel. It was under his leadership that the first part of the construction was completed on 10 hectares of the former garden, which Davydov managed to get from his father. After that, work on the arrangement of the park did not stop for another 25 years, until the park did not occupy the entire territory owned by the Davydovs.

.

After the revolution of 1917. He was forced to move to Odessa, but was still constantly interested in the fate of the park and corresponded with the manager. In the early 20’s the park was under threat of being cut down, but on its defense became the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, who not only protected the place, but also achieved the return of Davidov. Having visibly aged, he continued his work to develop one of the most beautiful parks in Ukraine, which lives on to this day.

.

At the end of the XX century, the Kirovograd Arboretum was finally recognized at the state level: it was awarded the title of monument of garden and park architecture.

.

In 2001, the park area, which had fallen into disrepair over time, began to be revitalized: the green area was recreated, playgrounds were built, amusement rides were restored and new ones were put up.

.

In 2008 Kirovograd Dendropark was recognized as the best park in Ukraine.
