Crazy House in Dalat (Tree Hotel)
The Crazy House is an original hotel built by a female architect, Dang Viet Nga, daughter of Vietnam’s prominent communist figure Dang Xuan Khy (1907 – 1988), who served as president for six years. The whimsical appearance of the building gives rise to various associations – from “Alice in Wonderland” to the masterpieces of Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi.
General information
The Crazy House has rooms shaped like caves and sea shells, a giraffe hall, columns shaped like intertwined banyan tree roots, and even a giant metal wire spider web. The official name of the architectural conundrum is Hang Nga Guest House and Art Gallery. It is located on Huynh Thuc Khang St. (Huynh Thuc Khang St., 3, tel. 063-82200). It’s a great place to stop by after visiting Lam Ti Ni Pagoda on your way to the city’s cathedral. Accommodation in such original interiors will cost between 20 and 60 USD (320,000 / 960,000 VND), while a simple visit costs only 5,000 VND. If you have a chance, you can talk to the hostess, who, by the way, graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute in 1965.
