Copan Ruinas

Copan Ruins are the remains of an ancient Mayan city in western Honduras. Modern scholars consider the site to be the heart of Maya culture. Copan existed from the first centuries BC, in the heyday (VII-VIII centuries AD) was the center of the kingdom of Shukuup – an independent state of the ancient Maya, covering the territory of modern southeastern Guatemala and southwestern Honduras. The extinction of Copan appears to be related to the general crisis of the Maya states in the ninth century.
