History and architecture of Cascade

The name itself reflects the essence of the landmark, which descends in large steps to Tamanyan Street. In its lower part there is a wide square 200 meters long, where at the very beginning there is a sculpture of Tamanyan leaning over his plans. The structure itself is 500 meters long, 50 meters wide, and the height difference between the base and the top is 100 meters; completing the Cascade since 1971 is the obelisk “Reborn Armenia” rising 50 meters.

.

Construction of the Cascade in Yerevan began in 1980, then was suspended due to the 1988 earthquake and the collapse of the USSR in 1991 and resumed again in 2002.

.

There are fountains and flowerbeds near the steps leading to the top. Inside the cascade there are premises where cafes, restaurants, exhibition galleries, etc.

.

It is worth noting the exterior design of the Grand Cascade, which reflects the ancient history of Yerevan. The fountains and various obelisks contain ornaments that were characteristic of the ancient state of Urartu. Of course, it is still difficult to appreciate the beauty of this structure, but when the construction is finished, the Grand Cascade will become the central place of recreation for all citizens. From the observation platforms on the tiers of the Cascade one can observe excellent urban landscapes with the Big and Small Ararat Mountains as a backdrop.

.

In addition, already inside the Cascade there is an escalator, which rises to two-thirds of the height of the structure, making it easier to climb. As for the staircase, it now has 675 steps, which can serve as a great exercise in climbing. Undoubtedly, the Grand Cascade is the final point in the life of the great Armenian urban planner Tamanyan.
