Birka

Birka is an ancient settlement founded by the Vikings in the late 8th century, which later became one of the largest trading centers in the Baltic.

.

General information

Birka is located 28 km west of Stockholm on Lake Mälaren on the island of Björkö (Birch Island).

.

On the outskirts of Birka, archaeologists have discovered the largest Viking cemetery in Sweden (over 2500 graves). Why the flourishing city so soon came to complete desolation – scientists do not know. Nowadays Birka is on the list of UNESCO protected sites. The museum displays local archaeological finds, but excavations continue (Opening hours: May-Sept. Mon-Fri. 10.00-16.00, Sat. and Sun. until 17.00).
