Bahla Fort

Bahla Fort is considered the most significant monument of Oman. Enemies and violent storms destroyed Bahla Fort more than once, so it was rebuilt several times. It was particularly badly damaged in 1610, after which it was rebuilt almost anew, as were the fortresses in Nizwa and Jabrin, Rustaq and al-Hazma. However, it is known that the fortress on this site existed since 1000 BC. It is considered the oldest in Oman. Until the 1960s, the best preserved part of the fortress was inhabited by the local Wali.

The fortress was in such a poor condition that for the first two years, restorers simply dismantled debris to get to ground level. Continuous restoration has been going on here since 1993.UNESCO has listed the Bahla fortress as a World Heritage Site.
