Zuma Rock (Aso Rock)

Zuma Rock is a large granite monolith located 55 kilometers north of the Nigerian capital, on the road connecting the cities of Abuja and Kaduna. It is the geographical center of the country. Also called the “Gateway to Abuja”, the rock is 725 meters long and 1125 meters high. This massive rock rises against the backdrop of a flat landscape. It was created as part of the Jos Plateau, standing out with distinctive landforms.

The monolith has great symbolic significance for both the city and the people of Nigeria. The image of Zuma Rock can be seen on the country’s 100 naira denomination currency units.

Some observers recognize a human face in the center of the rock. Because of this, locals believe that the monolith has some mysterious powers and is inhabited by powerful spirits that can cause accidents to daredevils who dare to climb to the top.
