Umayyad Mosque (Grand Mosque)
The Umayyad Mosque is located in Syria. It is one of the grandest and oldest temple buildings in the world. It also goes by the name of the Grand Mosque of Damascus. The construction of the Umayyad Mosque was carried out from 706 to 715. It is a huge complex. The mosque is separated from the noisy city by powerful walls. The inner courtyard, paved with black and white polished slabs and surrounded by a colonnade, has the form of a rectangle 125 meters long and 50 meters wide. There are 4 gates leading into it. The courtyard is surrounded on three sides by a vaulted gallery, and on the fourth side there is a prayer hall. In the middle of the courtyard are a fountain and a pool for ablutions.
