Talashkino village

Talashkino is a village in the Smolensk region, located 18 km south of Smolensk. The place is known as one of the centers of Russian cultural life from 1893 to 1914, comparable to Abramtsevo. Talashkino estate owes its fame and prosperity to its owner Maria Klavdievna Tenisheva, an educator and philanthropist. Having set a goal to revive peasant art crafts, Tenisheva and the artists invited by her organized educational and artistic-industrial workshops. In Talashkina visited and worked painters S. Malyutin, M. Vrubel, N. Roerich, A. Benois, M. Nesterov, K. Korovin, I. Repin, sculptor P. Trubetskoy, composers V. Andreev and I. Stravinsky.
