Свияжск

Sviyazhsk is a village and a real Wonder Island, located 28 km west of Russia’s third capital, Kazan. Sviyazhsk is washed by two large rivers: the Shchuka and the Sviyaga. Until a few decades ago, these lands were not popular and were in disrepair. Mostly artists came to Sviyazhsk, driven by the unique ancient atmosphere. Today, the territory of the island-city attracts numerous tourists who dream of enjoying picturesque views, feeling peace, touching the mysterious and majestic history of this place with a length of 500 years.

Highlights

The village is located in the Zelenodolsky district of the Republic of Tatarstan. The area of Sviyazhsk is 32,500 m2. The number of permanent residents is small – only 243 people, which is many times less than the number of tourists who come to the island every day.

The inhabitants of the village are called Sviyazhians. And they are all madly happy about the positive changes on the revival of the “Miraculous Grad”, which took place in 2008 after practically a whole century of decline. Until then, Sviyazhsk had no normal roads or modern communications, and had to live in crumbling hovels.

Now the indigenous population of the island lives in comfortable apartments, welcoming tourists and gladly participating in organized events: all kinds of fairs and festivals, knights’ tournaments, archery competitions and much more.
