Eyüp Sultan Camii Mosque

Eyüp Mosque is the third (after Mecca and Jerusalem) holiest shrine in the Muslim world. It was erected by order of Mehmed the Conqueror in honor of Eyüp Ansari, the standard bearer and friend of the Prophet Muhammad. Eyüp was killed in 674 when the Arabs besieged Constantinople for the first time. The complex dates from 1458; the mosque was rebuilt in 1798.Every day by 11:00 a.m., a meal is prepared for 500 local poor people at the imaret, a charitable institution attached to the mosque.
