History of the creation of the subway

Stockholm’s underground system began to be built in the early 1940s. The tracks were originally intended for high-speed streetcars. Already in the fall of 1950, the subway began to work – at that time there was only one line. During several years new rails were laid and the Green Line was gradually formed. After 7 years the Red Line was opened, 11 years later – the Blue Line. Thus, the Stockholm subway in 1975 had its modern look. It is now owned by SL, with the service contract being formalized on the basis of a tender.

Not only the walls of the stations are covered with images, but also the ceilings, floor, benches and signs. Some of the designs are really impressive. Many stations are decorated in the form of a forest, others represent pedestrian streets of long past centuries. The atmosphere of that time is created by black and white signposts and road markings, the ancient look of sidewalks and roads. The Stockholm Metro can be rightfully considered a real museum, most tourists take it as an attraction. Three stations have been recognized as the most unique in all of Europe by the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.

Solna Centrum – built on the Blue Line next to Näckrosen and Västra skogen. It is located about 30 meters underground in a rock formation. The walls of the room are in shades of red and green, and there are drawings about societal and conservation issues. The station was designed in the 1970s, so the images are relevant for that time. At the exit is the shopping center of the municipality of Solna, with the Råsunda Stadium nearby. There are over a hundred entertainment venues in the area.

The platform is adapted for the old type of trains, consisting of 8 cars. Several thousand passengers pass through here every day. The design of the station is characterized by a variety of shades, the wall paintings are made using all the colors of the rainbow.

T-Centralen is Stockholm’s main public transportation hub. This station is the most popular among Stockholm residents and visitors. It unites all existing lines of the Stockholm subway, and its premises are two-level. The upper part is at a depth of 8.5 meters, the lower level is located 14 meters from the surface. At first the station was called Centralen, but it was often confused with the train station of the same name, so in 1958 the letter T was added. T-Centralen has two exits – to Sergelstorg Square and Vasagatan Street. More than ten designers worked on the design of the space at the same time. The station is carved into the rock and its vaults are characterized by asymmetrical shapes and no finishing, instead they are only covered with a layer of paint. The arches and the lower parts of the pylons are painted blue, and the walls are painted to match.

Fare payment

There are several options for paying for a fare on the Stockholm subway. The most expensive is a single ticket – it is valid for one hour from the time of use. For it you will have to pay about 5 dollars. The ticket is obligatory stamped at the entrance, and the controller indicates the exact time of entry into the subway. It is also possible to purchase disposable coupons, the cost of which is about 2 times less. Tourists are offered special passes, they are valid from a day to several months. The Stockholm metro discount system applies to children, students and pensioners.
